Chests of Drawers
Arts and Crafts Style Buffet $950
Fine 18th century Queen Anne Highboy
Connecticut Valley origin, made and chalk-signed by "joiner" John Chapman, October 1772 in Killingsworth, Connecticut for Lt. & Mrs. Samuel Pierson, descendant of the founder of Yale University. Fine dovetailed case, sturdy and graceful cabriolet legs, cherry/maple construction, four graduated main drawers with nine smaller ones, all dovetailed with chamfered oak bottoms. Secret compartment cleverly hidden above top middle drawer. Lt. Pierson died in a horse accident in 1801, this great piece descended through his wife Rebecca's family to Roy McPherson, Leroy, New York. There were but two million people in all the colonies when this highboy was handcrafted, and pieces of this vintage, quality and provenance (available to the buyer) are difficult to acquire.
